SRI LANKA AND THE MALDIVES
A Helping Hands Tour
13 days/11 nights accommodated
Optional extension to the Maldives from Colombo, or cruise from Singapore
My first visit to Sri Lanka was in 1965 and I have been back a few times since. I enjoy the beauty, the national parks, and history of the island as well as the friendliness and warmth of the people. I have been disappointed that more New Zealanders have not discovered and enjoyed the island for themselves. When the Tsunami struck on Boxing Day, 2004, my first reaction was to try and help.
Our first "Helping Hands" tour departed for Sri Lanka on the 20th January, 2005 as a direct response to the needs of the Tsunami victims. We were able to resettle 65 families from 3 classrooms of a school where they had been temporarily housed (which enabled the school to reopen) into a building restored by the group, restore fishing boats to working order, and assist with the social needs of children orphaned in the tsunami. We were also able to assist in the re-establishment of the tourist industry on which so many Sri Lankans depend for their income. Since then we have also been able to assist in meeting the needs of schools and orphanages struggling to upgrade their standards amid developing country poverty. I am delighted to continue this programme. We are not directly constructing or renovating any buildings but are funding local contractors and visiting schools, orphanages, and new housing estates for Tsunami victims in the Kalutara area to help meet whatever needs they have at that time. We have provided so far new toilet blocks, better security in classrooms, musical instruments, science equipment, and students writing and study materials in schools. A carpenters shop reconstructed by one team in March, 2005 made furniture for new homes and for the open market, and sewing machines donated by some of our group members are still earning their owners a living.
We ask each person travelling on these tours to take $US100 to be spent on social needs in this area. You get to see and approve the project and meet the people involved.
Have a great holiday in a fascinating and beautiful destination and make a difference in the lives of the Sri Lankan people!

Depart Auckland
2010: School holiday special. Depart Monday 27 September - return saturday October 9
This is a special school holiday departure. We would particularly like teachers and family groups to join us on these departures for special programmes for 3 days in poor schools in the Kalutara area. The students, teachers, and principals in Sri Lanka appreciate it immensely. It was my original hope that we would be able to arrange sister school arrangements between these schools in Sri Lanka and Auckland schools for ongoing support. It is still my hope that we can do this.
Please note:
This tour can operate any week for a minimum of 4 passengers locally hosted in Sri Lanka and the Maldives - escorted from New Zealand for a minimum of 6
